A Sad Truth

Here is a sad truth about my Silver Dove series that I have mentioned on this website before, the instances where the Crow gives a bullied kid super powers is supposed to be a metaphor for a school shooting. These acts have become common within the United States to the point where we barely even notice anymore. It is mentioned on the news for a few minutes before it is forgotten again. It seems that a new one is occurring every week.

The way this metaphor is brought about in the series is that a person who is in pain receives some kind of power over others (for a school shooting this would be a gun while in the series it is super powers), and then they go on a rampage using this power to get revenge and to alleviate pain. Within the school they even have Crow Drills, which play out exactly to how the school shooting drills would play out when I was in school. A few decades ago we had drills for bombings and now we have drills for school shootings. Sadly each generation seems to have something to be afraid of.

Ever since Columbine, we have had a steady increase in school shootings by children in pain. Hopefully one day mental health services will not have stigma attached to them and people can get the help they need. For now though, all we can do is educate ourselves and try to do the right thing, but as Luis knows all too well, sometimes doing what you think is right may not actually be the right thing to do in the situation.
