Fears and It

Hello everyone! For this blog post I wanted to discuss the power that Rick is given within this latest story The Fear. For those who read the story, Rick is given the power to turn into whatever you fear the most. This power was inspired by the book It by Stephen King. When I was in high school I read a great deal of Stephen King’s classics, It included, but It always scared me the most. The idea of being able to transform into whatever a person fears the most was brilliant and I thought it would be an amazing super power for a villain.

It wasn’t until later that I realized a classic villain already had this power before Stephen King’s It, and that would be the Scarecrow from Batman who first appeared in 1941. Fear being used as a weapon has been around for longer than people would think, but fiction turned it into a super power.

I had thought that if you were a villain, to use fear as a power would be the greatest power to have since you could make people just run away from you so you could do what you wished without even having to do something against the other person. It and the Scarecrow used their power of fear to get what they wanted, while Rick used it to get revenge. Is one of these people better than the other? No, but it has to be one of my most favorite powers that I have given within this series.

  1. I saw the same concept in an episode of Orville I think it affects people powerfully whether they acknowledge their fears or not.
