Hello everyone, so yesterday was a holiday in my country called Memorial Day where you celebrate the soldiers who did not make it home from war. It’s a bit of a depressing subject for a holiday, but it is rather important to remember those who have fallen.
Within my stories, there is always the character who can be described as the reluctant soldier. In Death’s Assistant that was Alba, and in Silver Dove that is Colomba. I always make them reluctant when it comes to being soldiers since I believe that a soldier should be reluctant when it comes to a lot of the things they face. They have to become experts in death, not something that a person with a healthy mind would want. That is why being a soldier can be so admirable; because you have to train and force yourself to do things that you know may be damaging not only to your body, but to your soul as well.
Both of my soldiers share similar feelings; they do not wish to hurt anybody, but they know that they have to fight to keep others safe. They constantly wish that they could let go of this duty, but know that they are the only ones who can protect their people. It is because of their duty that they end up suffering and making sacrifices that they had never wished to make. They accept it though, because that is what heroes do.
